Soccer Meets Science Policy

On the controversial ball (again) being used in the World Cup, US reserve keeper Marcus Hahnemann says:
“Technology is not everything. Scientists came up with the atom bomb; it doesn’t mean we should have invented it.”

The last World Cup ball was blamed for the lack of goals in the tournament. Top scorer was Klose with 5 goals, the lowest ever, and not one forward was in the top three players.

It looks like FIFA have not learnt that lesson.

Further down in the article there's an alternative view on technology -- "I think we learned a long time ago as goalkeepers, it’s no excuse. You have to figure out the movement of the ball. If it moves too much, then you just get it out of harm’s way and don’t try to be too cute and clever with it. It’s about adapting.”

The atom bomb saved my father from being sent from Europe to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan. I don't know anything about soccer balls, but I have no problem with the invention of the atom bomb.

The atom bomb prevented war between the great powers. It saved tens of millions of lives by making great power conflict self-defeating.
